Prayers for Everyday

LENT

Lord, last night was Shrove Tuesday
with a pancake supper at church
put on by the youth to fund summer projects.
Today, Lent begins as we count down
to your crucifixion and Easter.
For some Lent is a time of austerity.
As a young person I gave up candy.
Such practices remind us of your sacrifice.
As I become older, Lent is a time of examination
so that I may grow in new ways
into the life of your kingdom. Amen.

Psalm 51:17:
The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

2 Corinthians 13:5:
Examine yourselves to see whether you are living in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless, indeed, you fail to meet the test!
