O Holy Spirit of God,
enter into our hearts and minds
that we may truly know your will.
Kindle the flame within us
that cannot be suppressed.
Send us out to those in need
of your comfort and joy in life.
Lead me to speak your word
that others may know that
you are present in the world. Amen.
But filled with the Holy Spirit, he (Stephen) gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
Hymn: Holy Spirit, Truth Divine
O Creative God, the psalmist says
that you made us
a little lower than yourself.
It is amazing that you, as our Creator,
continue to concern yourself with us.
It reminds us to treat
other people with respect
because they are honored by you.
Sometimes we have to look
below the surface
to see the imprint of your creation.
Help us to live up to
the expectations you have for us. Amen.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor.
Hymn: Creating God, Your Fingers Trace
Dear Lord, as children we were taught
to say “grace” before meals.
During a period of “grace”
one may have extra time to pay bills.
In the dictionary the word grace
refers to “unmerited divine assistance,”
“a virtue coming from God,” and a
“ state of sanctification.”
Dear Lord, grace is the gift
of your presence offered to all who
will accept it.
2 Corinthians 13:13:
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.
Hymn: Amazing Grace
Lord Our God, we know
that you are with us always.
But sometimes we almost forget
and feel we are alone, although
we have your wonderful creation,
Christians from many churches,
and your Holy Spirit around us.
Open our hearts and minds
to be aware of your many gifts to us,
that we may be ready to receive them.
Lord Our God, we bow in silence
and await your filling
that we may be effective servants.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Hymn: Lead On, O King Eternal
Dear Lord, yesterday the people
who live on our floor of these apartments
got together at dinner to share
stories and fellowship.
Some have lived in this building
since it was built 24 year ago.
Our newest resident
has been here less than a year.
Everyone is friendly.
No one has to cook
since we all eat in the dining room
of our retirement complex.
As we care for each other, Lord,
your love is shown.
A friend loves at all times, and kinsfolk are born to share adversity.
Hymn: Be Present at Our Table, Lord
Father God, Sunday was Father’s Day,
a day when we honor our earthly fathers.
My husband and I went to the home
of one of our daughters for a steak dinner.
Our other daughter baked a strawberry-rhubarb pie.
My husband received presents.
After dinner we played games.
Father God, you planned for us
to live in loving families,
to help us understand your love for us.
Thank you for families and loving fathers. Amen.
As a father has compassion for his children, so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him.
Hymn: Faith of Our Fathers
You command us to love, Lord.
Is love, then, more than a feeling?
Today people change partners
like putting on new clothes.
But if love can be commanded,
then it is more than a feeling.
It’s a commitment.
Lord, when you talk about heart, soul,
mind, and strength, you must mean
more than feelings.
Our society is falling apart,
and children are not protected.
Lord, wake us up
to the responsibility of your kind of love.
Jesus answered, “The first is ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Hymn: Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
