EXPECTATIONS

In the February garden
the weeds are doing their best
to get a head start.
A crocus is blooming.
Daffodils are six to eight inches tall.
With spring on the way
we can enjoy the effort
made by legitimate plants
to fulfill the gardener’s vision.
And you, O God, as you look down
on your human creation,
do you yet  have hope that your dream
for humankind will come true?
As plants green up and grow,
will we finally see the light
and fulfill your expectations?

John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

GIVE ME STRENGTH

Now I have to give up coffee, Lord,
my one cup in the morning,
I’ve enjoyed it so much
along with my devotions, Lord.
It was my one indulgence
besides chocolate.
It makes me understand drug users
who keep going back to their habit
even if it kills them
because it makes them feel like themselves
or as they want to feel.
That’s me and coffee, Lord.
It picks me up.
Then I get so much more done in a day.
Without it I’m just a limp rag.
Lord, give me strength!

Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

1 Corinthians 10:31
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.

REFRESHED

When I am aligned
with the overarching Presence
that fills the world,
my inner being awakens,
stretches, and looks about.
Adventure beckons,
I leave behind
the shell of earlier existence,.
brambles disappear
from my path,
and a sense of purpose
propels me
beyond the fog of confusion
that shrouded the way.
Psalm 23:2
He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul.

FEBRUARY FLOWERS

“Oh who can make a flower?
I’m sure I can’t can you?”

Father God, on a warm day a few days ago,
my husband and I went to the garden
to see what was going on.
The daffodils were up about three inches.
A hyacinth was showing buds.
A weed with tiny blue flowers bloomed.
In the house African violets, an orchid,
and declining poinsettias bloom.
Cut flowers from a birthday celebration fade.
Father God, we give thanks for flowers.
Their beauty reminds us of our heavenly home
and your care which always surrounds.

1 Peter 5:7
Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

PRAISE!

What a wonder, Lord,
to see people walking easily,
as though it was natural.
Only a month ago,
my hurt and swollen feet
could barely hold me up.
I’d walked too much
during a vacation.
I didn’t know that was possible.
Now they feel normal again.
I give thanks
for what I used to take for granted.
Our bodies perform wonders every day.
Thank you, Lord, for health
and your reassuring presence
during times of pain.

Job 6:10
This would be my consolation; I would even exult in unrelenting pain; for I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

ASKING

God of our fathers and mothers,
you know that as we get older
our first memories are still strong
while others fade away.
I think I have accepted my childhood
but sometimes feelings erupt;
anger, tears…when I least expect.
You know about those things, God.
You pulled me through.
Without those memories
I wouldn’t be who I am.
Take away the hurt, Lord,
so I may have peace.

Psalm 73:26
My flesh and heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
