GOOD FRIDAY

Today, Lord, some of your followers
go to church and receive
a sign of ashes on their foreheads.
It’s a way of remembering your death.
We will have a service in our chapel
and several will participate
by reading the passion story.
We grieve over our sins
that led to your death on the cross.
But we give thanks
that you loved us so much
that you gave your life
that we might know true life.
Thank you.  Amen.

John 3:16
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.”

BEAR FRUIT

Lord, every year
it gets a little harder
to get down and up in the garden.
Will this year be our last?
Yesterday my husband
trimmed the rose bush,
while I cut down dead stalks.
We look forward
to roses and other flowers
as the season moves on.
Lord, you expect us to
bear fruit for your kingdom.
You gave your life
to show us your love.
How shall we show
your love for others today?
John 15:1-2
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower.  He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit.   Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit.”

PASS IT ON

Eternal and Almighty God,
I give you thanks
for my grandparents
who taught me
and showed me your way.
They embodied your Spirit.
Help me to show
your love and presence in life
to my grandson.
Give me words to tell him
of your way.
I pray that he will know your presence
in his life.  Amen.

Psalm 145:4
One generation shall laud your works to another; and shall declare your mighty acts.

GETTING READY

Gracious God, in this week of preparation,
I am reminded of the dresses
my mother-in-law sewed and sent in the mail
each year for our girls.to wear.at Easter.
The package also included
underclothes, socks, and purses.
What wonderful gifts of love,
not only for the children,
but also for the busy mother.
Your sacrificial love
has come down to us
in many ways.
Open our eyes this week
to ways we can pass it on.  Amen.

Luke 3:4c
“Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”

Luke 6:31
“Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

GUN VIOLENCE

Prayers for Everyday

O Lord, on Saturday
we joined a march, against gun violence,
organized in our retirement community.
We have allowed those
who want to make money on guns
overwhelm our common sense.
Forgive us, Lord
for all the children
and young people
who have lost their lives
because we have looked the other way
instead of dealing with the gun lobby.
You showed us the way of peace
and we turned to violence.
Forgive us, Lord.  Amen.

Luke 6:29a
“If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also.”

Romans 12:17-18
“Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”

FORGIVENESS NEEDED

Forgive me, God,
for joking about
my friend’s quirks,
and she overheard .
The look she gave me…
I was letting out some
of my own annoyance.
Now she doesn’t speak to me.
What can I do to make it right?
Forgive me, Lord
and show me some way
to reach out and repair the damage.

Psalm 1:1
Happy are those who do not…sit in the seat of scoffers.

2 Corinthians 5:19
…in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.
