SIGNS OF OUR TIMES

Now, Lord, yesterday in our area
we had the deepest snow of the season,
on the second day of spring!
What to make of it?
Is this some kind of sign?
Has our blasting off into outer space
slowed our planet’s spin?
Most people don’t believe in signs, Lord.
I suppose that was true in Biblical times, too.
Thank you, Lord,
for giving your life out of love for us.
That was the real sign,
to which the Father set his seal.

Luke 24:26-27
“Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”  Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in the scriptures.

ON TRACK

Ah, Lord, sometimes I get off track.
I get caught up in other people’s causes
rather than the ones that are right for me.
Keep me on track, Lord.
You did not go off to Rome
to set everything straight.
You ministered to those at hand.
You went to Jerusalem to give your life,
and you were raised to show
that there is more…
There is eternal life.
Open my eyes to your truth.  Amen.

Mark 16:19
So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down on the right hand of God.

Hymn:  Open My Eyes, That I May See

THE BIBLE MUSEUM

Yesterday, Dear Lord, we boarded a chartered bus
and, along with others from our retirement village,
went to the Bible Museum in Washington, D.C..
We saw bits and pieces of Old Testament manuscripts
and Bibles up to the present.
One floor had scenes of Biblical life
like the carpentry shop of Joseph, the father of Jesus.
A theatre showed clips from movies
such as PP“The Ten Commandments” with Charlton Heston.
Another section told of Martin Luther King and Billy Graham.
We enjoyed lunch in the cafeteria.
Lord, some of your servants have provided this
for our education and enjoyment.
Thank you for all who share your message in new ways.

Acts 13:47
“For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, ‘I have set you for a light for the Gentiles, so that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’”

KINGDOM COME

O Father God, the daffodils are blooming.
Further north folks are having snow,
while we are having early spring.
Spring should inspire our national leaders
to work together for good,
instead of threatening each other.
Do they not look beyond the here and now
to your eternal kingdom?
Father God, give each of us
your Spirit of love for everyone
so that your kingdom
my come on earth,
and we may have peace in our time.

Matthew 6:10
Your kingdom come.  Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Hymn:  It is Well with My Soul

IMMIGRATION

Dear Lord, your people were often migrants.
We are a country of immigrants.
Everyone came or had ancestors who came
from another country.
Even American Indians came from somewhere else.
Our government is deporting people
who have been here many years,
but who have not become citizens.
Our immigration service hasn’t enough
personnel to process them.
Lord, as a baby,
you were an immigrant in Egypt
before returning to your own country.
Help our government find a just
and reasonable solution.  Amen.

Hebrews 13:2
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.

MAYHEM!

Lord, what is to be done
when children and youth
are not safe in school?
The idea of arming teachers and guards
to make our schools safe
is ridiculous.
The wild animals are gone
so hunters turn to people.
We are blinded by power.
You gave your life
to show us the way
of life giving love.
Send us leaders
who can turn
this country around.
We need help, Lord..
Save us from ourselves.  Amen.

John 12:47
I do not judge anyone who hears my words and does not keep them, for I came not to judge the world but to save the world.

LEAD US, LORD!

O Lord, your Spirit
resides in the rising
morning mist
filtering through the trees.
Your Spirit lives in me
and all who will open the door.
Your Spirit shines
whenever two spirits
leap across the gap
of individuality
and fuse in midair.
Your Spirit of love
leads us away
from demented fantasies
caught up in the minutia of rules
that don’t apply.
O Lord, lead us by the hand.
We are so frequently blinded.

Psalm 25:5
Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long.

Hymn: Precious Lord, Take My Hand
