FOOD

O Lord, in our old age,
we are fortunate;
our meals are prepared
and we have choices.
Food is such an important
part of life.
People spend hours cooking
in restaurants or at home.
Some people over eat,
and some people do not eat enough.
But Lord, you pointed us
beyond physical food
to food for the spirit.
Thank you, Lord, for teaching us
the way that leads to life. Amen.

Luke 12:23
“For life is more than food, and the body more than raiment.”

John 6:27
“Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life.”

AN INSPIRATION

Lord, another gray day of 72 degrees.
A perfect day for weeding.
Not many gardeners out.
The red and yellow roses,
water iris, and pink anemones
are in full bloom:
Each flower, a miracle of beauty.
Gardens are a source
of inspiration, Lord.
They remind of all your good gifts.
Thank you.
Luke l2:27
Consider the lilies, how they grow:  they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.

James 1:17  King James Version
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

GOD WITH US

Lord, on Sunday morning
we sang “Holy, Holy, Holy!”
which conveys a sense of awe
in your presence.
But the word “holy” is hard to define.
One has to feel it.
We bow down in spirit
to acknowledge the numinous.
One summer my minister grandfather
chastised his young intern
for teaching us this hymn.
Grandpa thought it was beyond us.
Lord, you know that children
realize through their senses
things adults don’t understand.
Keep us open to your presence among us.  Amen.

Revelation 4:11
“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things and by your will they existed and were created.”

Hymn:  Holy, Holy, Holy!  Lord God Almighty

MEMORIAL DAY

O Lord, today we remember
those who have died in wars.
When we think how many brave men
and now women have given their lives
fighting for our country,
we must take time to grieve.
Lord, give us the wisdom and courage
to find better ways
to settle our differences.
Open our eyes to your way
of love for all.  Amen.

Luke 6:27-31
“But I say to you that listen, Love you enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.  If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt.  Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again.  Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

THE FUTURE LIFE

Lord, yesterday I visited
an old friend in the Health Care Center.
She continues to radiate your Spirit
though her health is declining.
She is an inspiration to many people
from her church, who enjoy visiting her.
How grateful we are, Lord,
for the continuous line of Spiritual witness
from your day to the present as
your Spirit imparts eternal life.
Do not let us weaken as we approach the change
from this life to the next,
but let us rejoice ever more fully in your love. Amen.

Philippians 3:20-21
But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.  He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself.

HYMNS

Lord, hymns express our experience of your presence
day or night, good times and bad,
holidays and ordinary days.
Lord, music conveys a sense of harmony
and being together as one.
You shared life on earth
and understand the experience of fellowship.
Your Holy Spirit enters into our lives,
and we know the wonder of your presence.
As we sing hymns together
fill us with your Spirit,
that others may be drawn to you.  Amen.

Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.
