Lord, some say that “cleanliness
is next to godliness.”
Yesterday we had the rugs cleaned
in our apartment.
My husband moved all the small things
off the floor onto the furniture
so the man could do the job.
It’s a relief to have dirt removed.
Lord, it reminds of the relief we feel
when we come to you,
confess our sins, and receive forgiveness.
You forgive when we ask, even when
we don’t know what we’re doing..
Thank you, Lord, for your loving mercy.  Amen.

1 John 1: 9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Lord of fresh beginnings,
the window washers are coming:
a pair to soap and squeegee
the windows they can reach.
Books and tables have to be moved
to allow access.
Soon, light shines through
unrestrained by dust accumulation.
Our lives also need refreshment
from accumulated distractions
of our true purpose:
letting your light shine through
Cleanse us again, Lord. Amen.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Lord, the wren is building
a nest in the birdhouse.
We meant to clean the house
before she came back.
Too late now.
The birdbath needs to be straightened.
A bumblebee checks on the iris.
Weeds continue, Lord.
Like our lives,
there are still things to work on.
I need to get on my knees
and pull up the weeds
that threaten the flowers.
Give me strength, Lord.  Amen.

Matthew 13:30
“’Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at the harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them into bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barns.’”

O Lord, on Saturday
we joined a march, against gun violence,
organized in our retirement community.
We have allowed those
who want to make money on guns
overwhelm our common sense.
Forgive us, Lord
for all the children
and young people
who have lost their lives
because we have looked the other way
instead of dealing with the gun lobby.
You showed us the way of peace
and we turned to violence.
Forgive us, Lord.  Amen.

Luke 6:29a
“If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also.”

Romans 12:17-18
“Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”

Forgive me, God,
for joking about
my friend’s quirks,
and she overheard .
The look she gave me…
I was letting out some
of my own annoyance.
Now she doesn’t speak to me.
What can I do to make it right?
Forgive me, Lord
and show me some way
to reach out and repair the damage.

Psalm 1:1
Happy are those who do not…sit in the seat of scoffers.

2 Corinthians 5:19
…in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.

O Lord, I have always wanted to be special.
Now I read about someone
who celebrated being ordinary
among ordinary folks.
It gave me such a feeling of relief:
to not have to prove something.
Lord, your presence within
makes us special.
Forgive me, Lord, for trying so hard
to be better than others,
rather than accepting myself as I am:
one of your children,
all of whom are special

Psalm 105:4
Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually.

Luke 13:30
Indeed, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.
