If you really wanted us to be perfect,
you shouldn’t have given us a choice.
Freewill is a mixed blessing.
Some would say it’s a burden.
They would like to be able to rampage around
and not be held responsible.
They always blame the Devil.
to do the good is not so easy.
The “good” is a judgment call.
What is good for Jack may not be good for Jill.
So much depends on learning and experience.
The Ten Commandments are, after all, pretty general.
And the Golden Rule can be even more evasive
in actual practice.
Lord, your Spirit is our best guide.
Give us the wisdom to follow.  Amen.

Isaiah 58:11
The LORD will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail.

Dear Lord, yesterday I missed an opportunity
to share your love. I’m sorry, Lord.
I was not quick enough or confident enough
to respond to a person’s need.
Help me to be more sensitive
to the distress of others
and give me courage to respond.
I am grateful that you
are a constant source of love
and answer our pleas for help.
Guide me in your way, Dear Lord. Amen.

Isaiah 58:11:
The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail.

Hymn: Lord, Speak to Me

Dear Lord, I have never
liked to think of myself as a sheep.
Sheep are so dumb.
They may wander away and get lost.
They may even bunch up in a storm
and smother.
I do like to think of your care
for all of us,
and that you go ahead of us
and lead,
instead of herding us from behind
with a stick.
Lead me as I consider new paths
that I might follow to serve you. Amen.

Psalm 23:1-3:
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake.

Hymn: He Leadeth Me: O Blessed Thought

Gracious God, we have a new day
of a new week: a time to begin again
to do the things you would have us do.
As we bow before you in prayer,
quiet our minds, as we listen for
your still, small voice, and wait—
until we are filled with your Spirit
and are refreshed and ready for the day.
Guide and be with us as we try
to express your love to everyone
you are sending us to today. Amen.

1 John 4:7-8:
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.

Hymn: This Is a Day of New Beginnings

Lord, sometimes it is difficult
to see you in others.
One has to look beyond
the outward façade
to the inner being, and even then
it isn’t always easy.
Is everyone a member of your family, Lord,
or only the chosen few?
Open my eyes to those
you want me to reach out to today.
Let me not hesitate, Lord,
to show your love and care.

Matthew 25:40:
“Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”

Hymn: Open My Eyes, That I May See

Lord, you taught your disciples
to pray a short and simple prayer
which has come down to us
through the church and the Bible.
In our own prayers
we add many wants and needs.
We also should remember
to give you thanks and praise.
Guide us, Lord,
as we come before you
to ready ourselves for the day.

Luke 11:1:
He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”

Hymn: The Lord’s Prayer

Dear Father, we read of
more and more people
arming themselves with guns
in their homes. I mentioned this
this to a young person, who said,
“I would like to have some
because you never know
what is going to happen.”
It is hard to believe how anxious
people are about the future.
Movies show world disasters
and mayhem all the time.
I look forward to the super powers
working things out peacefully.
Father, we rely on your steadfast love.

1 Peter 5:7:
Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.

Hymn: Children of the Heavenly Father
