O Holy God, we bow before you
and open ourselves to your presence within.
We wait expectantly.
We review our schedule for today:
doctor appointments, meetings,
reading, helping others, or shopping.
Guide us, O Holy God,
that we may do your will.
Kindness, consideration, rejoicing, sharing;
all are part of your plan
for growth in your kingdom.
Open our hearts and minds, O Holy God,
to experience your presence in new ways.
We await your guidance. Amen.
Psalm 16: 11
You show us the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy; in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Hymn: Surely the Presence of the Lord
O Lord, yesterday we read in the newspaper
about suicides by children in our country.
And then I remembered a boy
who lived behind our Grandma
when we were children.
He played with my brother at first,
but then he grew meaner and meaner.
In fifth grade he wouldn’t talk
to anyone, not even the teacher.
In sixth grade he hung himself.
Lord, what can be done?
There must be an answer somewhere.
Show us your way, Lord.
“Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven.”
Hymn: Children of the Heavenly Father
Holy God, yesterday in church
we celebrated Pentecost,
the day in the church year
the coming of the Holy Spirit.
It is amazing that you would
consider imbuing mere mortals
with your Spirit:
It is a responsibility
not be taken lightly.
Holy God, guide us through
this day and always,
that we fulfill your desires
for our lives. Amen.
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
As mist pervades the day,
so your Spirit, Lord,
infuses our lives
and awakens us
to your presence.
Our spirits are soothed
and rest peacefully.
Fill us with all good things,
that we may serve you well.
Guide and direct us
as we seek to do your will. Amen.
“The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Hymn: Every Time I Feel the Spirit
O Lord, today the wax
was removed from my ears.
Now conversation is understandable.
Yesterday, even with hearing aids,
garbled messages came through.
Sometimes, Lord, you must wonder
why we don’t hear you.
It has nothing to do with our ears,
but rather with our hard hearts.
Open our ears and hearts
to your messages, Lord.
Give us guidance
that we may fulfill your will.
But as for that in the good soil, these are the ones who, when they hear the word, hold it fast in honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patient endurance.
Hymn: O Jesus, I Have Promised, verse 3
A few days ago,
we read in the paper that we are sending
a spacecraft to Mars.
What do you think, Lord?
Are we getting carried away
with our curiosity?
Or are you impressed with our ingenuity?
Adam and Eve got in trouble
in the garden of Eden
by their curiosity.
They went against your command
by eating from the tree
of the knowledge of good and evil.
But Christ redeemed us.
Lord, guide our scientists and politicians
to use their knowledge for good.
And the Lord God commanded the man, “You may eat freely of every tree in the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.”
The heavens are telling the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
Another appointment with my eye doctor, Lord.
Will she pronounce me well
or am I a chronic case?
Getting older makes the outcome less assured.
I’ve seen her off and on for 20 years.
She took my former doctor’s place.
My eyes have been looked after,
and lately an infection,
which I hope is overcome.
I enjoy seeing her, but I’d rather be well.
Give me reassurance, Lord,
that in the end all will be well.
The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts; so I am helped, and my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.
