GOD WITH US

Lord, as we pause and open ourselves
to your presence,
we wait expectantly
for your Spirit to fill
all the nooks and crevices of our being.
Then I remember in summer
sitting in church next to Grandma
in my short dresses, and sticking to the pew
each time we stood up.
And drawing on the bulletin was not allowed.
“It is good for you to learn to sit still,” Grandma said.
I would close my eyes
and try to think about God.
Not much different from what I am doing now.
Lord, you are always with us.
Guide us as we begin the business of the day.  Amen.

Psalm 51:10-12
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.  Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me.  Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.

MONDAY

Father God, it’s a new day:
A new day for living in your kingdom.
There’s weeding in the garden
to be done this morning.
And a meeting about church services
this afternoon.
So our time on earth is spent.
Does that have your blessing, Father God?
Being retired, we are not in the leading edge.
We read in the paper of electronic game contests
which we don’t understand,
but which the young enjoy.
Those in the work force continue strong.
Each day is a jumble of work and play.
Guide us as we seek to live in your presence.  Amen.

Matthew 6:9-10
“Pray then in this way:  Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name.  Your kingdom come.  Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

MORE WEEDS

Great and gracious God, it’s a new day
with time to do your will.
It’s misty and moist.
The weeds in the garden taunt me.
I want to go and yank them out.
Is that how you feel about our erring ways?
The trouble is, there are always
more weeds coming up.
Gracious God, open our eyes
to your vision of heaven on earth.
Guide us into your way.  Amen.

Matthew 13:37-39
He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels.”

SUN-UP

The sun is coming up.
Clouds are turning pink.
Day begins.
Lord ,what  have you in store for us today?
I pray for our country.
Show us the way, Lord.
I pray for the world and all the people in it.
We need your presence here, Lord.
Open our eyes to your guidance,
Lead us to lighten this corner
of the world.  Amen.
Psalm 19:1
The heavens are telling the glory of God; the firmament proclaims his handiwork
.

GOOD JUDGEMENT

Ah Lord, if you wanted us to be perfect,
you shouldn’t have given us a choice.
Free will is a mixed blessing.
Some would say it’s a burden.
They would like to be able to rampage around
and not be held responsible.
They want to blame the Devil.
Lord, trying to do good is not so easy.
What is good for Jack, may not be good for Mary.
So much depends on learning and experience.
The Ten Commandments are pretty general.
And the Golden Rule can be even more evasive
in actual practice.
Lord, your Spirit is our best guide.
Give us the wisdom to follow.  Amen.

John 4:25-26
“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him.  God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

WHAT NOW?

Lord, the celebration of a birthday
and the passing of another year,
is a good time to take stock
of our accomplishments
and plans for the year ahead.
Open our hearts and minds
to your guidance
that we may continue to grow
in our love, understanding,
and service to others.
May our lives praise you.  Amen.

Mark 8:34-35
He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.  For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and the sake of the gospel will save it.”

BIRTH OF OUR COUNTRY

Lord, last week we celebrated
the birth of our country.
We watched local fireworks
from our balcony.
The television showed
the ones in Washington, DC.
It was difficult to get into the spirit this year.
Our country is so divided.
Lord, you have guided our country
through the years.
Don’t abandon us now   Amen.

Acts 10:34-35
Then Peter began to speak to them:  “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fear him and does what is right is acceptable to him.
